But it’s not that scary, it’s too flashy. It’s the sort of interface that screams “THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SCARY”. Everything is bright red, black or a shaky white. As the game is really dark (or insanely bright with shadows turned off), it is very, very easy to get lost or separated.Īctually, if I’m honest, the entire user interface is very… in your face. ![]() There are objective markers but they don’t point to you where you need to go, so if you need to go up or down a level, it’s cumbersome.ĭead Rising 4 however is lacking something crucial – the ability to place markers to mark out loot and items. And because the maps are pretty big, it’s easy to get lost or separated. It somehow shows both too much information and too little. But getting into a map took longer than I expected. Thankfully you can skip the end-of-level stat screens. Took us a while to actually get into a game. However, I wasn’t that impressed with the loading times. But these missions kinda take away from the zombie slaying. You need to do a bunch of tasks before the day ends (at 9pm) and doing these are how you progress and unlock different episodes. Interrupting that though are, well, timers. We are given quite a big area to explore and it’s satisfying murdering enemies with different tools. Kill some baddies, make some cool weapons, do some side objectives. Most weapons, both melee and ranged, break pretty quickly. And you kinda have to, since weapon durability is, well, pretty shitty. Each mission is randomized with zombies and item pick ups, and you really can just grab stuff and kill zombies. The map we played on was pretty damn large and actually looked apocalyptic, and there was a LOT of stuff to explore. I was actually somewhat surprised by how much stuff each map contained. Dead Rising 4 Initial thoughts: Lots of zombies, lots of stuff. Once we’d downloaded the game, of course. So we bought the game and decided to give it a go. ![]() Brother already owned it but me and sister didn’t. But when the siblings and I spotted two copies of Dead Rising 4 in a local store, we decided to pick it up. Most of them were there to move the plot along.For ages, my zombie game of choice was always Left 4 Dead. Their interactions with Frank were so brief that I just didn’t have enough information to form an opinion on them. You can hear more of her backstory in collectible audio files, but I didn’t find them all.Īnd I didn’t care much for the antagonists or the town’s citizens. It’s a similar situation with Vick, the student who dragged Frank back to Willamette in the first place. Brad, who you meet in the beginning, is absent for most of the game, mostly talking to Frank through a walkie-talkie. The rest of the cast, however, is underwhelming. But, he does have a tangible history with the town, and his constant barrage of sarcastic comments - perhaps a way of coping with the fact that he’s stuck in his second zombie outbreak - is somewhat endearing. I’m not sure how many of these optional encounters exist in Willamette, but the handful of battles I found were all over within five minutes.įrank West isn’t the most well-developed character. And finally, you face the flamboyant leader. First, you hear a few lines of dialogue that show how crazy they are. They more or less followed the same formula. The outlandish Maniacs, human survivors who lost their minds after the outbreak, were also disappointing. ![]() The different types of enemies - faster zombies, smarter zombies, and paramilitary soldiers - helped break the monotony, but I was still just mashing buttons to kill them. I was never in any danger, even when zombies cornered or surrounded me. ![]() The forgiving gameplay is fine if you only hop on for an hour or two at a time, but it becomes boring if you play in long chunks (like I mostly did). I only died three or four times, and all of those deaths came from a challenging point toward the end of the game. Even if you wanted to, you can’t change the difficulty level.
